In the state of Michigan if a debt collector is unable to serve you what happens?

and how many tries do they have?

They have three months to serve you for the Summons to remain good. It expires on the three month date. They generally stop after three or four attempts at personal service (and leaving you notice on debtor's door to contact them and ask the judge to grant them an Order for Alternate Service to then tape on the door and send by certified mail and regular mail. Or, they will seek a second summons and try to serve it personally within the next three month window. On a side note, there is no requirement that you sign anything when they serve you personally. They will try to make you sign but that is for their benefit, not yours. BPP
